WOCA Exterior Wood Shield is a ready-to-use, colourless treatment for untreated and naturally weathered exterior wood. It makes the surface water- and dirt-repellent without adding colour pigment to the wood.

Wood Shield is particularly suitable when you want to retain the wood’s natural grey patina while increasing its resistance to moisture, dirt and weather exposure.

It can be used on wooden decking, garden furniture and other absorbent exterior surfaces. It is also suitable for porous mineral surfaces such as concrete, stone and unglazed tiles.

What does colourless mean?

Exterior Wood Shield does not contain colour pigment and therefore does not create a deliberately coloured oil finish. The existing wood colour and natural patina remain visible as much as possible.

Colourless does not mean that the wood will never change colour. Exterior wood continues to age and turn grey naturally due to sunlight, moisture, weather exposure and contamination.

The product is therefore primarily intended for wood where you want to retain the existing natural or grey appearance. If you want to enhance, restore or change the wood colour, choose a suitable colour of WOCA Exterior Oil instead.

Always make a test area first. Even a colourless treatment can temporarily deepen or slightly alter the appearance of the existing wood colour.

Which surfaces is Wood Shield suitable for?

WOCA Exterior Wood Shield is suitable for absorbent exterior surfaces such as:

• Untreated wooden decking

• Naturally weathered decking boards

• Untreated or weathered garden furniture

• Wooden fences and other exterior structures

• Absorbent concrete surfaces

• Porous natural stone

• Unglazed, absorbent tiles

The surface must be sufficiently porous to absorb the product evenly. Wood Shield is not suitable for lacquered, painted, oiled, glazed or otherwise completely sealed surfaces.

Do not use a foam roller or unsuitable low-quality roller. These can cause streaks, air bubbles, application marks and uneven absorption.

Preparing the surface

The surface must be completely clean, dry, absorbent and free from dust, dirt, grease and algae.

Clean dirty exterior wood with WOCA Exterior Cleaner. If the wood is severely weathered, deeply soiled or contains old oil residue, first use WOCA Exterior Deep Cleaner.

Allow the cleaned surface to dry completely. Lightly sand raised or rough wood fibres if necessary and carefully remove all sanding dust.

Always make a test area on an inconspicuous section. Once fully dry, check absorption, appearance and water repellency.

Applying WOCA Exterior Wood Shield

Shake the container thoroughly before and during use. The product is ready to use and must not be diluted.

Only apply Wood Shield in dry weather and at a temperature between approximately 15 and 25°C. Avoid direct sunlight, intense heat, rain and high humidity.

Apply the product thoroughly, thinly and evenly with a suitable brush, roller or spray gun. For production applications, the wood may also be dipped into the product.

When using a spray gun, hold the nozzle approximately 10–15 cm from the surface. Carefully protect the surrounding area against spray mist.

Avoid puddles, runs and excessively thick areas. Immediately distribute surplus product over adjacent untreated sections.

Drying time and full protection

Allow the treated surface to dry without use and protect it from water. WOCA Exterior Wood Shield reaches its full protective effect after approximately three days.

The precise drying time depends on temperature, humidity, ventilation, substrate and the amount applied.

Do not expose the surface to rain, standing water or intensive use while it is drying.

Changing to oil or paint later

A surface treated with Exterior Wood Shield cannot be painted or oiled directly. Its water-repellent effect may prevent the new oil or paint from penetrating and adhering correctly.

If you later want to change to WOCA Exterior Oil:

• Carefully sand the existing Wood Shield treatment from the surface

• Clean the wood with WOCA Exterior Deep Cleaner

• Rinse the surface thoroughly

• Allow the wood to dry completely

• Make a test area first

• Apply the selected WOCA Exterior Oil afterwards

Maintenance

Inspect the treated surface at least once a year. A new treatment may be required when water no longer beads on the surface or dirt begins to penetrate more easily.

Clean the surface before every maintenance treatment and allow it to dry completely. Reapply Wood Shield thinly and evenly.

Maintenance frequency depends on the wood species, location, level of use and exposure to sunlight, rain, wind and standing water.
