Product description

WOCA Exterior Oil Thunder Grey for decking, garden furniture and exterior wood

WOCA Exterior Oil Thunder Grey is a water-based exterior wood oil for wooden decking, garden furniture, cladding, fences, log cabins and other outdoor wood. Its powerful storm-grey pigment gives the wood a deep, cool and modern appearance while keeping the natural structure and grain visible.

Thunder Grey is darker and more powerful than a standard grey shade but has a softer and more distinct grey appearance than black. The final colour depends on the wood species, its original colour, absorption and the number of coats applied. Always make a test area first.

Benefits of WOCA Exterior Oil Thunder Grey

  • Suitable for decking, garden furniture, cladding, fences and log cabins

  • Gives exterior wood a deep, cool storm-grey appearance

  • A modern shade between classic grey and very dark anthracite

  • Suitable for both light and dark wood species

  • Contains grey pigment and a UV filter

  • Protects the wood against water, dirt and weather exposure

  • Keeps the natural structure and wood grain visible

  • Water-based and easy to apply

  • Fast-drying with a matt finish

  • Suitable for new and previously oiled exterior wood

  • Coverage: approximately 8–12 m² per litre, depending on the wood and its absorption

What finish does Exterior Oil Thunder Grey provide?

Exterior Oil Thunder Grey gives outdoor wood a strong storm-grey colour with a cool, contemporary appearance. It combines particularly well with modern gardens, concrete, natural stone, steel, glass and black or anthracite exterior features.

Unlike paint, the oil does not create a completely opaque coating. The wood structure and natural colour variations remain visible and contribute to the final result. Pale wood generally produces a clear contrast and allows the cool grey shade to stand out. The result on dark wood is usually deeper and more subdued.

Always make a test area and assess the colour only after the oil has dried completely.

Use our professional rollers and brushes

For an even application, always use the professional rollers, brushes and accessories shown as related products at the bottom of this product page.

Depending on the surface, we recommend:

  • Tisa-Line 25 cm roller and frame for decking and large surfaces

  • Tisa-Line mini roller and frame for garden furniture and smaller sections

  • Special flat brush for boards, edges and difficult areas

  • Special round brush for joints, corners and profiled wood

  • 10 × 3 cm block brush for larger wooden components

  • Professional extension pole for comfortable application on decking

  • White polishing pads for evenly rubbing the treated surface

  • Cotton cloths for removing surplus oil

Do not use an unsuitable low-quality roller or brush. The application tools have a significant effect on distribution, coating thickness and the final appearance.

Preparing the exterior wood

The wood must be completely clean, dry and free from grease, dirt, algae and loose remnants of previous finishes.

Clean new and previously treated wood with WOCA Exterior Cleaner. For heavily soiled, greyed or weathered wood, use WOCA Deep Cleaner.

Allow the wood to dry for at least 24 hours after cleaning. Its moisture content must not exceed 17% during application. Carefully remove raised wood fibres with 120-grit sandpaper if necessary.

Untreated, non-impregnated softwood may require treatment with WOCA Exterior Wood Primer. Do not use this primer on red cedar or larch.

Applying WOCA Exterior Oil Thunder Grey

Stir the oil very thoroughly before and during use to distribute the grey pigment evenly.

Only apply the oil in dry weather and at a temperature of at least 13°C. Avoid direct sunlight and very high temperatures.

Apply an even, thin coat with a suitable roller or brush. Treat the end grain first. The oil has a creamy appearance during application. The final storm-grey colour becomes visible as the water evaporates.

Remove all surplus oil with clean cotton cloths within five minutes. Pay particular attention to grooves, joints, corners and other areas where oil may collect. Do not leave a thick or wet layer of oil on the wood.

If the wood has not absorbed the oil evenly or certain areas do not appear sufficiently saturated, touch them up with another very thin application. Always perform a test application first to check the colour, adhesion and absorption.

Professional tip

Once dry, buff the surface with a white polishing pad. This helps distribute the oil evenly and produces a smoother, more uniform and compact finish.

A suitable single-disc polishing machine with a white pad may be used for larger surfaces.

Drying and curing time

At approximately 20°C, the oil normally requires 24–48 hours to cure. The precise drying time depends on temperature, humidity, weather conditions, wood species and the amount applied.

Protect the treated wood against rain and all other contact with water during this period.

Maintaining WOCA Exterior Oil Thunder Grey

Clean the wood with WOCA Exterior Cleaner whenever necessary. Apply another thin coat of WOCA Exterior Oil Thunder Grey when the storm-grey colour or protection begins to diminish.

For normal maintenance, the existing finish usually does not need to be removed completely. Loose, damaged or severely weathered wood fibres must be cleaned and lightly sanded where necessary before applying a maintenance coat.
