WOCA Exterior Wood Primer 2.5 litres for exterior wood

WOCA Exterior Wood Primer is a water-based pre-treatment for highly absorbent and vulnerable exterior wood. The primer helps protect the wood against moisture, reduces the risk of cracking and improves the adhesion and durability of the subsequent treatment with WOCA Exterior Oil.

The primer is suitable for cladding, fences, windows, doors, carports and other exterior wooden structures. It is not a final finish: always complete the treatment with WOCA Exterior Oil.

Which wood species is the primer suitable for?

WOCA Exterior Wood Primer is particularly suitable for highly absorbent, soft and vulnerable wood species, including:

• Spruce and fir

• Pine

• Larch

• Accoya

• Oak

• Untreated and non-pressure-treated softwood

• Previously oiled wood that has become severely weathered

Red cedar, newly pressure-treated timber, tropical hardwood and unknown wood species may absorb the product differently. If in doubt, ask for advice and always perform a test application on an inconspicuous area.

Exterior Wood Primer is a pre-treatment only. Without a suitable final treatment, it does not provide complete and durable protection.

Allow the primer to dry sufficiently and then finish the surface with the appropriate colour of WOCA Exterior Oil. Apply the final treatment within 14 days.

Do not use an unsuitable low-quality roller or brush. The application tools have a significant effect on distribution, coating thickness, adhesion and the final appearance.

Preparing the wood

The wood must be completely clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, grease, algae and loose remnants of previous finishes.

Clean new, dirty or previously treated exterior wood with WOCA Exterior Cleaner. Completely remove all loose paint and oil residues and allow the cleaned wood to dry for at least 24–48 hours.

The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 17% during application. New wood should be treated as soon as possible after installation.

Always perform a test application first to check absorption, adhesion and product compatibility.

Applying WOCA Exterior Wood Primer

Only apply the product in dry weather and at a temperature between 15 and 30°C. Avoid direct sunlight, intense heat, rain and high humidity.

Shake the container thoroughly before use. Exterior Wood Primer must be applied undiluted.

Apply the primer thoroughly, thinly and evenly with a suitable brush or roller. Begin with the end grain, as these areas generally absorb more moisture and product.

When treating cladding and other vertical surfaces, work from the bottom upwards. Where possible, treat each wooden section along its complete length to avoid visible overlaps and application marks.

Distribute the product carefully and avoid puddles, runs and excessively thick areas.

Drying and finishing with Exterior Oil

Under normal conditions, allow the primer to dry for approximately 24 hours. The precise drying time depends on temperature, humidity, wood species, ventilation and the amount applied.

The surface must be completely dry before applying WOCA Exterior Oil. Finish the primed wood with the appropriate colour of Exterior Oil within 14 days.

Clean brushes, rollers and other tools with warm water immediately after use.

Maintenance and inspection

Inspect the treated exterior wood at least once a year. Look for damage, drying, severe discolouration and areas where the protective oil has worn away.

Clean the wood when necessary and repair damaged areas promptly with the appropriate WOCA Exterior products. Maintenance frequency depends on the wood species, construction, location and exposure to sunlight, rain and wind.
